Research Tool for Materials

The materials database contains media on our key topics of working conditions in the textile and clothing industry and the environmental impact of clothing. The types of media include studies, guidelines and reports, as well as films, podcasts and web tools.

The paper presents new research on the growing problem of microfiber pollution and looks at the sources and extent of microfiber pollution, the pathways through which it enters the environment, and how its accumulation can affect the environment and human health. With textile production and consumption expected to continue to increase globally, the annual release of microfibers could increase by 54% by 2030 if no action is taken. The report also highlights measures that policymakers, textile and clothing manufacturers, retailers and investors can take to address microfiber pollution.

This paper serves as a basis to frame and inform the Clean Clothes Campaign’s work on discrimination and develop a holistic intersectional approach to challenge discrimination and structural inequalities in the industry. By defining the key concepts, and collecting existing research and data on discrimination, we will identify the current gaps in knowledge and build a strategy to inform our research, advocacy and campaigning to ensure that our work responds to inequality and is inclusive of all garment workers. This paper should be viewed alongside the Global Strategic Framework #2, as a foundation for how intersectionality and inclusion will be embedded within the mission of the CCC Global Network.

Germany is one of the most important textile markets in the world and imports 9% of global clothing imports. 90% of the textiles in our wardrobes are produced in developing countries, where poor working conditions and the use of numerous toxic chemicals are unfortunately too often still common practice. Germany has a particularly great responsibility to promote compliance with social and environmental standards in textile supply chains. The Federal Government is therefore committed to decent working conditions, living wages, the avoidance of toxic chemicals and environmentally friendly production processes worldwide.

In the report, the Federal Government sets out which measures were implemented in 2018 and presents new targets for 2019.
