This report is an output of the ‘Putting Water Stewardship to Work Programme’ which aims to embed responsible water use at the heart of the growing textiles and apparel sectors in Africa. With support from the Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation (SDC), the initiative targets technical support to ‘sherpa’ countries in the fashion value chain to establish the value of improved water stewardship for the sector, for delivery of the Sustainable Development Goals and for shared water security (see boxed definitions). Lessons will be shared across Africa, and across the global fashion sector to support the transition to sustainable resource use. Our study explores the importance of the textile and apparel sector for economic and social development in Africa and despite the priority water challenges facing the industry. It complements related studies on the cotton sector, at a national scale in Ethiopia, and in the textiles and apparel sector globally.
In addition to the ‘Fast Fashion – a review in three parts’ dossier, the Romero Christian Initiative has produced material for presentations. On the one hand, it consists of slides for the design of workshops, seminars and lessons. Facts and figures describe the Fast Fashion system, its consequences for people and the environment as well as possibilities for action. They are available as PowerPoint or PDF and are supplemented by notes. On the other hand, graphics are provided for lectures and actions. The effects of the fashion industry can be illustrated with the graphics of the Fast Fashion Study. All graphics are available as a ZIP file; Information on copyrights and explanations are given.
The factsheet provides a general overview of the structure, framework conditions and challenges of the textile industry in Indonesia.
Persistent problems have been documented in the effectiveness of social auditing and ethical certification schemes when it comes to preventing, detecting and addressing forced labour. In recent years, the social compliance industry has awoken to these limitations and there is growing discussion of the need to improve forced labour detection and remediation systems. To date, reform efforts have centred around improving ethical certification standards and audit methodologies on paper, but there is little evidence that incremental improvements are leading to meaningful change on the ground.
