Im April 2022 wurde mit dem Dindigul Agreement das erste rechtsverbindliche Übereinkommen zu Geschlechtsspezifischer Gewalt in Asien unterzeichnet. Mit H&M gehört auch ein Bündnismitglied zu den Unterzeichner*innen, darüber hinaus PVH, GAP, die frauengeführte Gewerkschaft Tamil Nadu Textile and Common Labour Union (TTCU) sowie der lokale Zulieferer Eastman Exports. Das Abkommen fand viel Beachtung in Presse und Medien, die von einem „Landmark Agreement“ sprachen.
The purpose of the study was to see the pertaining situation of worker rights from a decent work lens. We have studied seven industrial sectors from Chattogram such as readymade garments, construction, healthcare, restaurant, aluminum, beauty parlor, and transportation (three-wheelers). We carried out a survey with samples from workers and businesses, spanning all seven sectors. About 400 workers are surveyed at random. Twenty KII are conducted to gather qualitative data from stakeholders, including employers, TU leaders, academicians, CSO, journalists, Government agencies, etc. Moreover, three FGDs are conducted, two of which involved workers and one of which involved firms and stakeholders.
Industrial safety in the readymade garments (RMG) sector has been passing a critical phase with a lack of proper coordination, monitoring and enforcement which are likely to be the reasons behind rising industrial accidents. During the post-Accord-Alliance period, industrial safety in the RMG sector could not maintain the standards of the Accord-Alliance period. Reasons for accidents have been spread in the post-Accord-Alliance period in electrical, fire, short circuit and structural issues. The accidents are observed mainly in medium- and large-scale factories.
This report includes nine chapters in which fellows aimed to investigate transformative trends of social and economic development, technological and social innovations, factors of social balancing, ecological sustainability, and gender equality. The policy papers offer alternative strategies in their respective areas and propose the formation of inclusive platforms for fostering the implementation of a future economy.
Gender wage gap in the labour market is a widely discussed issue in relevant discourse and literature. Societal attitude, occupational segregation, vertical segregation, barriers to entry and retention, and discriminatory practices at workplace are often cited as factors contributing to women getting lower wages compared to men. However, the ILO publication titled “Global Wage Report 2018/19: What lies behind gender pay gaps” singles out Bangladesh as an outlier where women’s average wages, both raw and factor-adjusted, were found to be higher than those of men. These counter-intuitive findings have raised a lot of interest and queries as regards the underlying causes leading to these results. The present study undertakes a thorough investigation of the methodology deployed by the ILO study and critically examines the factors contributing to the reverse gender gap as found in case of Bangladesh.
